Hello everyone! Starting today’s newsletter with our topic on TikTok addiction 😵💫
A good search engine, sometimes a companion while eating alone, and a good representative for brands’ marketing and collaboration processes; here comes TikTok with its “Make your day” slogan, a popular app worldwide. With its hidden algorithms and the irresistible pleasure of fast consumption, TikTok has recently become a topic of much debate as it has turned into a harmful addiction. In fact, it has been announced that the US is preparing to sue TikTok for developing addiction 👩🏼⚖️
Unfortunately, this is not the first lawsuit filed against TikTok.
In the past, it was fined for violating the UK data protection law 💰
Why is TikTok Addictive?
TikTok has a stream of content consisting of an average of 60-second videos tailored to your interests by artificial intelligence. These waves, perceived by the brain in different rhythmic patterns, are seen as a reward system for the content we watch, providing pleasure in this way.
Of course, while searching for more of these appealing contents, we may also come across negative/horrifying videos. Thus, without realizing it, we end up spending hours that cause the brain to fluctuate between different emotions.
How Do We Know If We Are Addicted?
- Increased time spent on TikTok
- Decreased interest in the real world
- Weakening of social relationships
- Experiencing focus and concentration problems? Congratulations, you might be a TikTok addict!
Can We Prevent Tiktok Addiction?
When TikTok is used beneficially, it surpasses most social media platforms. By shortening the viewing time of this app, we can prevent TikTok from becoming an addiction. Also;
- You can use the restrictive mode to limit the time you spend on the app,
- You can develop target-oriented behaviors; in other words, you can search for a specific profile or look at anything and then leave the application,
- You can reduce your dependency by decreasing usage,
- To overcome boredom, you can turn to more interesting alternative activities.
You can prevent this result brought on by our digitized world with awareness and limitations. The important point is to be able to use social media platforms like TikTok efficiently and healthily by balancing between the real world and the digital world.
Wishing everyone a great week until we meet again!
